Abstract:Objective:To score the synovitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis(RA) using grey scale(GS) and power Doppler (PD) ultrasonography(US),and explore the potential value of the two methods for assessment of disease activity. Methods:The DAS28,ESR and CRP of 40 RA patients were recorded. A total of 18 joints, including bilateral wrist, the second through fifth metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints, were examined using GSUS and PDUS measures to derive US scores for each patient. Results:US detected significantly more joints with synovitis than clinical examination did. The GS joint count (GSJC),GS joint score (GSJS) and the PD joint score (PDJS) were significantly correlated with DAS28. The PD joint count (PDJC),PDJS and the GSJS were significantly correlated with ESR and CRP. We did not find significant correlations between the PDJC and DAS28. Similarly,GSJC did not correlate with ESR and CRP. Conclusion:Sonography has the potential to evaluate disease activity in RA patients.
