Abstract:
Customs Medical Reports were medical and health reports of various trade ports in China compiled by Chinese customs medical officers from 1871 to 1910. They recorded the disease prevalence and treatment, public facilities, meteorological data, social features, and other precious historical materials of the three trade ports of Jiangsu in the late Qing Dynasty, including Nanjing,Zhenjiang and Suzhou. Customs medical officers from European and American countries sailed across the ocean, bringing the fruitful achievements of Western medicine to China. Under the historical background of“Western medicine spreading to the East”,the medical and health conditions of Jiangsu trade ports have been developed to certain extent, which has promoted the progress of the local society. Customs Medical Reports compiled by the customs medical officers are not only important foreign language historical materials for studying the trade ports in modern China, but also reflect the medical culture and medical technology level of different countries in modern times, which has great significance for the in-depth study of medical social history.
