Abstract:English has its characteristic edge over other social sciences in promoting college humanistic education. However, due to the unsatisfied teaching mode in medical colleges, English has failed to bring its humanistic potentiality into full play. English and medicine can be seen as a whole from many perspectives, just as medicine can be written into English literature and the functions of both are similar to some extent. Three changes, if truly fulfilled, can help English make its own attributions in humanistic education in medical colleges and universities. They are: re-thinking of English as a social science, adjusting teachers’ work and unifying English with other social sciences. Implementing a new mode of English education according to the actual situations should be taken as a work guideline for English teachers in medical colleges and universities.
