Objective Analyzing the research evolution trend, status, hot spots and frontier of commercial health insurance from 1995 to 2020, to provide experience for the promotion of commercial health insurance research in China. Method Based on China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the research literatures related to commercial health insurance from January 1995 to December 2020 were systematically screened, and CiteSpace5.7.R5 software was used for visual analysis. Result A total of 1063 valid literatures were included, the number of commercial health insurance research literatures was increasing as a hole from 1995 to 2020; lack of cooperation and communication between research institution or scholars; commercial health insurance, medical insurance, health insurance were the high-frequency terms; critical illness insurance, new health reform, the State Council were the burst terms; the research focus varied at different stages, with more focus on the application of computer Internet technology between 1995 and 2003, specialized management between 2003 and 2009, refinement and precision of insurance types between 2009 and 2015, and following preferential tax policies of the government and focusing on the big health industry between 2015 and 2020. Conclusion Supply side reform and demand side management of commercial health insurance will be the focus of future research; cooperation between financial insurance research institutions or scholars and medical research institutions or scholars will open a new prospect for commercial health insurance research; commercial health insurance will evolve to the direction of fine precise insurance and systematic industry research of health industry chain; evidence-based and metrological methods will be important tools for insurance research.
