Abstract:Based on the empowerment theory, the multi-period difference-in-differences of CFPS survey data in 2016, 2018 and 2020 are carried out to explore the influence mechanism of the use of the Internet on the happiness of the rural elderly. Research shows that the use of the Internet can significantly improve the probability of rural elderly self-rated high happiness. Specifically, although the use of the Internet significantly reduces the frequency of leisure and entertainment for the elderly, it can improve their physical health self-ratings, exercise frequency, intergenerational support and social participation, thereby improving the level of happiness. However, although Internet use can improve the subjective well-being of rural elderly people, the number of rural elderly people who can fully enjoy this technological dividend is not large. Therefore, it is urgent to strengthen efforts in promoting rural digital construction to eliminate the information poverty of rural elderly.
