Objective:To investigate the consumption habits, food safety knowledge among rural customers and problems of regulatory authorities to reveal the situation of rural food safety, and to give suggestions to improve the rural food safety regulation. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 2 697 rural customers and the interviews with regulators for how to solve rural food safety issue. Results: The legal system of food safety lacked of the pertinence of rural areas, and rural food safety supervision was ineffective. Customers was lacking in food safety knowledge and awareness of rights, and it was difficult to defend their rights for its high cost. Conclusion: We should establish a more targeted legal system for rural areas, improve supervision efficiency, the self-protection ability and consciousness of rural residents to guarantee rural food safety.
