Objective To introduce a novel technique for management of the aortic root in type A dissection operation and investigate its clinical efficacy. Methods We performed a retrospective review of 32 consecutive patients with acute type A aortic dissection between January 2016 and September 2017. Among these patients, 24 were selected to have the modified sandwich repair of aortic root dissection. The hemorrhage of anastomotic stoma was observed and short-term outcomes were followed. Results The volume of drainage in 2 cases was more than 1500ml in first 24h. No bleeding complication was found in all the cases .Two cases died, one died of severe low cardiac output syndrome and the other died of massive cerebral infarction. The rest 22 cases were cured and discharged. Echocardiography and computed tomographic angiography were performed to monitor the pathological change in the aortic root. Freedom from moderate and severe aortic regurgitation was 100%. Conclusion The modified sandwich technique for management of the aortic root in type A dissection operation could be reliable and effective.
