Research progress on the stigma and de⁃stigmatization of dementia in

                                                        old adults

Abstract:As the intensification of population ageing, the incidence of cognitive dysfunction(also known as
“dementia”)is on the rise. The impact of the“stigmatization”of the diseases on dementia patients has received
widespread attention. The article reviews the concept, type and current state of dementia“stigmatization”and
summarizes its characteristics in terms of knowledge, attitude and behavior. It also examines the impact of
“stigmatization”on the social participation, health⁃seeking behavior and health of older adults with cognitive
impairment. Additionally, the article discusses current international interventions and the effectiveness of
existing problems regarding the“de⁃stigmatization”of dementia. Based on existing research it proposes building
a“de⁃stigmatizing”social environment through dementia⁃friendly communities, and at the same time focusing
the need to address the utilization of health services and health inequalities caused by “stigma”. We also
emphasize the importance of equity and cultural inclusion in building dementia⁃friendly communities.
