Abstract:Social media has become a technological support and interactive platform for women to construct
and present themselves, and it has been widely recognized that the information profusion about ideal beauty on
social media platforms has led to “appearance anxiety”. The protective filtering of body image ⁃ related
information has developed into an important intervention strategy for women to actively address the triggering of
appearance anxiety caused by ideal beauty information. This study applied a mixed research method to clarify
the mechanisms behind protective filtering behaviors of body image ⁃ related information and developed a
protective filtering scale applicable to young women. Study 1 primarily explored the factors influencing
protective filtering behaviors and constructed a theoretical model based on the grounded theory and specified the
connotation of protective filtering. Study 2 followed the standardized scale development process and developed a
protective filtering behavior measurement scale containing three dimensions and 18 items. The results of this
study indicated that the protective filtering scale has good reliability and validity and is effective when applied
to the population. It can be used to measure the protective filtering behavior of body on image ⁃ related
information among young women in China.
