The context of Western medicalization

——On the research landscape of local medical research in China

Abstract：Since the introduction of the concept of medicalization，its academic research process has gone
through three stages: from the identification of the expansion of medical knowledge and professional domination
to the reflection on medicalization as a social control mechanism leading to the creation of iatrogenic diseases，

to the response to health care commercialization and interest competition. The research context of Western
medicalization has been built，but there are still apparent deficiencies，especially the Western⁃centric research
model and one⁃sided critical attitude. In addition，with the development of globalization，medicalization is not
only a“local”product within the Western medical and social systems framework but also inevitably interacts
with other countries. Under the influence and adaptation of traditional Chinese medicine culture and“people⁃
centered”institutional principles，medicalization as an imported product has been given a new theoretical and
practical understanding.
